Elmer visits his grandfather Eldo. He has great fun reminding Eldo of the things they used to do together. But, is Eldo as forgetful as Elmer thinks? He may be old, but he is an elephant, and elephants never forget. Do they?

Once a year on Elmer's Day, all the elephants decorate themselves and have a parade, and this year Elmer comes up with a plan to include the other animals as well as the elephants.

All the elephants of the jungle were gray except Elmer, who was a patchwork of brilliant colors until the day he got tired of being different and making the other elephants laugh.

When Elmer the patchwork elephant and his cousin Wilbur decide to go whale-watching, as their grandfather Eldo did at their age, their journey becomes far more of an adventure than they anticipated.

Baby Elephant cannot get to sleep when he loses his teddy bear, so Elmer sets out to find it.
